Sigiriya

One of the most recognisable and magnificent sights in Sri Lanka is Sigiriya. This massive monolithic column of old rock fortification rises 370 meters above the plains around it.

History: As his royal residence, King Kashyapa I constructed Sigiriya in the fifth century AD. With intricate gardens, frescoes, and a fortified castle, it was a triumph of engineering and design at the time.

Key Attractions:

  • Lion’s Paw: A large paw of a lion cut into the rock face that leads to the top.
  • Frescoes: The exquisite collection of prehistoric paintings known as the Sigiriya frescoes features stunning figures in a variety of stances.
  • Mirror Wall: Previously, the surrounding scenery was mirrored in this polished stone wall.
  • Gardens: There are several terraces, lakes, and fountains in the gardens around Sigiriya. The top provides sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
Cultural Significance:

  • Sri Lanka’s architectural inventiveness and rich cultural legacy are embodied at Sigiriya. It bears witness to the highly developed civilisation that once flourished on the island many years ago.
Best Time to Visit:

  • From December to April, during the dry season, is the ideal time to visit Sigiriya. However, during the busiest travel season, it can get very busy.
